5 Ways To Help Keep Eczema Under Control In Hot Weather
Posted by Kelly Northey on 10th Nov 2014
When the weather warms up, kids love to go out and play – but did you know that hot weather can be one of the most aggressive triggers for eczema flare ups? Heat, sweat, chapped skin, dry air, and other factors can all create the perfect environment for eczema to show up, but today we’ll be showing you some simple ways to beat the heat and help keep your kids’ skin itch free!
Here are our top 5 ways to keep eczema under control in hot weather…
1. Pick The Right Fabric
Prevention is always the best way to avoid a heat-induced eczema flare up, and choosing clothing made from the right kinds of fabric is a great step. Bamboo and cotton are both naturally wicking fabrics that help draw excess moisture off the skin so that chafing and rashes don’t happen.
2. Moisturize
Adding a penetrating moisturizer to the skin before play can help it protect itself while also minimizing the need for excess sweating. If you can find a great moisturizer that also has sunscreen protection you can tackle both things with one product!
3. Take Breaks
If you take scheduled breaks every 20-30 minutes to give your child’s skin a chance to cool down, and to give you a chance to check problem areas for irritation, you may end up avoiding a big flare up later on. These breaks are also a great time to re-apply sunscreen!
4. Stay Hydrated
Provide water, green drinks, smoothies, or coconut water to your child to help their skin have all the resources it needs to stay protected, soft, and safe during a day of play in the heat.
5. Rinse Away The Play
Once play is over, a quick shower using cool water can help wash away sweat, toxins, unused moisturizer residue, and heat from the skin. Rinse, apply fresh moisturizer, and you’ll see happy skin!
